Highlights with narration of the acclaimed new opera by Toni Morrison and Richard Danielpour. A riveting true story of love, sacrifice, and tragedy (from the same material as Morrison's classic Beloved), about the infamous 1856 trial of fugitive slave Margaret Garner that inflamed passions throughout pre-Civil War America.
Fleeing Kentucky's Maplewood Farm in 1856 to Ohio, Margaret Garner made the horrific decision to sacrifice her children when facing recapture, rather than see them returned to the bonds of slavery. Her desperate act simultaneously placed her in violation of Ohio's state law for murder and in violation of the federal Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 creating intense national debate, addressing crucial issues in constitutional law and posing key questions at the core of the rift in the Union.
Danielpour and Morrison's Margaret Garner is one of a small handful of contemporary operas successful enough to inspire several different productions within just two years of its premiere. The opera played to sold-out houses in 17 of its premiere performances and galvanized communities to unite in the spirit of cooperation and purpose, bringing thousands of new opera audiences to theaters.
Come experience this unique American story in an intimate performance of some of the opera's highlights. Recommended for ages 12 & up.
