Dear Society Members and Friends,
As we come to the end of the calendar year, we want to thank each of you for making 2011 such a great year for the Society. In February, we completed a 600-page Festschrift for Toni Morrison, and we celebrated her 80th Birthday at the Library of Congress with special tributes including a letter of congratulations from President and Mrs. Barack Obama. In addition, we installed our Fifth Bench by the Road in Concord, Massachusetts in May and our Sixth Bench by the Road in Washington, DC, in September, when Professor Morrison also read from her new novel, currently titled Home (anticipated publication in May 2012). It is because of your commitment to our work and your willingness to attend and support these events that we have been so successful.
We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of our accomplishments this year, to thank you for your support, and to give you an opportunity to renew your membership, make a contribution, or join the Society, if you have not already done so.
Plans for 2012 include holding our annual business meeting in San Francisco at the American Literature Association Meeting over Memorial Day weekend, 24-27 May 2012, where the Society also will sponsor panels. Details and CFP will be on the website shortly, so please check back.
Membership renewals will be due by June 30th. Thank you in advance for your membership renewal, and we wish you a productive and enjoyable year!
