Dear Society Members and Friends:
We know that you believe, as we do, that Toni Morrison is the most important writer of our time. She has written nine highly acclaimed novels, a commissioned play, an acclaimed libretto, a scholarly study of American Literature, and many articles, reviews, and essays on American history and culture. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards in the humanities in the United States and abroad, she is studied in high school and college courses in every state in the nation, and she is the reigning American recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Because her work addresses themes and issues important in American culture and because its impact is transformative for communities of readers beyond the classroom, her work is, by any measure, a national treasure.
The Toni Morrison Society is committed to preserving this treasure. For more than fifteen years, the Toni Morrison Society has provided a forum for university scholars, high school teachers, and the lay community interested in Toni Morrison’s works. From small groups for young readers to teaching workshops for high school educators, international conferences for scholars, and outreach projects for the general community, the Society has made sure that the broadest impact of Toni Morrison’s work is realized.
Still, there is much work to do, and we cannot do this work without the financial support of committed individuals like you. Because we know that you value Toni Morrison’s work and its importance to humanistic studies, we invite you to join in our efforts at continuing the Toni Morrison Society’s programs. We realize that for many of you, the current economic situation makes any donation this year an added burden. We believe, however, that your support, even during these challenging economic times, will be a wise and lasting investment─for now and for the future.
