Professional development workshops and resources for secondary school language arts teachers. The workshops focus primarily on the challenges of teaching Toni Morrison's works to high school students. The Language Matters Initiative was funded by the NEH for a year-long workshop in 2002-03 and multi-region workshops and a summer institute in 2005. Teaching workshops in language arts will be sponsored biennially by the Society in conjunction with the Biennial Conference Series.
